Western Muswell Hill towards East Finchley N2
West of Muswell Hill Broadway, is one of Muswell Hill’s sought after enclaves - Fortis Green - which derives its name from the main road linking Muswell Hill with the Great North Road - providing quick access to the M1, A1 and the North Circular Road.
It is largely populated by young families and is home to several established Primary Schools - such as Tetherdown and Coldfall - as well as Fortismere Secondary School.
Situated in wide, tree lined roads, the architecture in Firs Avenue, Birchwood Avenue, Fortismere Avenue, Leaside Avenue, Collingwood Avenue and Midhurst Avenueall provide an interesting mix of terraced, semi detached and detached houses, ranging from the red brick designs of “Edmondson”, through to the “Collins” built era, many with deep off street parking spaces, and/or integral garages, and often with gardens that are between 100ft. and 150ft. in length.
Other than these, including the “Ringwood Estate”, are a variety of Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and post war, 1920’s and 1930’s houses, many of which are still single dwelling family houses, although a proportion have been converted into flats. There are also some “very sought after” Edwardian and “Collins” built blocks of mansion flats - many of which still retain the original “Arts and Crafts “ features and fireplaces.
The large playing fields surrounding Fortismere Secondary School and Coldfall Primary School, are supplemented by the equally large and interesting surrounds of Coldfall Wood, which is considered one of the oldest forested woodlands in Southern England and marks the most Southerly edge of the last “ice age”.
