Rural Muswell Hill
The Rookfield Garden Estate dates to the very beginnings of the development of Muswell Hill and is formed by the triangle of Etheldene Avenue, Muswell Hill and St James’ Lane.
Like Hampstead Garden Suburb - a few miles to the west and developed around the same time (c. 1910-1915) - the Rookfield Garden Estate has a varied selection of affordable family homes, within a planned community and a real “Arts and Crafts” background - all providing masses of the stylish original features linked with this period.
There are large spacious houses - and one block of purpose built flats also retaining an “Arts and Crafts” feel and interior décor - meandering through private gated roads.
With its vernacular architecture, green communal spaces, tennis courts and low density of irregularly grouped houses, the influence of architect Edwin Lutyens and the “Arts and Crafts” movement are absolutely to the fore.
